Anunțați finaliștii Cuprinol Shed of the Year – Anul ‘Ciumei’

În fiecare an, acoperim competiția Cuprinol Shed of the Year, o celebrare a unei mari tradiții britanice: construirea sau reutilizarea adaptivă a șoproanelor pentru utilizări moderne.

With the lockdown, many people have spent more time at home – so they needed an outlet for their creativity and to occupy their time and the first place these sheddies looked was their humble garden sheds—and they have converted them into multi-use buildings”

Hambarul liliacului

Este minunat construit, în întregime manual, folosind „medieval post and rail building using mortice and tenon lap joints in the base plate, rough wind braces, mortice and tenon at top of posts, birds mouth rafter joint into birds mouth tenon in main beams. Tongue and fork mortice and tenon at the apex.”

The Oratory was needed for three main reasons. First: the need for a Catholic Oratory (place of prayer) within my own home. The Catholic Faith became the centre of my life and it became necessary to set aside a sacred space for prayer, meditation, study and contemplation. Second: as I live in an isolated rural community in the Welsh countryside, and as I have no personal transport, a place of worship in the home was necessary. Third: since being received into the Catholic Church, the numbers of people asking to visit for spiritual direction increased greatly. Therefore, space was needed. Initially, a small 7 feet by 5 feet shed was converted into a sacred space. This has been added to twice to cope with the ever increasing demand on space. The present Oratory is a very simple construction, built from timber frame with an outer cladding of Feather Edge boards. All materials are sourced locally, with all the timber coming from sustainable forests within a 20 mile radius of my home. The Oratory now occupies a space of 10 feet by 8 feet and stands at an overall height of 14 feet. The inside walls and ceiling are painted in white and the internal measurements of the sacred space are 8 feet by 6 feet with an internal height of 10 feet.

I am blessed to celebrate Mass every morning at 8am. Since the first lockdown last year, I have been live streaming the Mass using Facebook Live. This has meant that a regular congregation from as far away as New Zealand, Australia and South Africa have been able to join me for Mass. It is truly a blessing to be able to reach so many people using modern technology, all from the confines of my shed!

[Father Black] only started zooming Mass from his shed during lockdown so it is a new use.”

Hoult scrie:

The Hideaway was built by my late husband, Ray, in 2001 to be used as a quiet retreat for myself. I have always loved bird watching so Ray built a shed incorporating a window that overlooked the bird feeders on our patio so that I could sit and watch the birds in comfort. Ray passed away in 2018 so the shed is now very special to me as it was built with love and a memory of him sits within the walls. It also gave me a comfortable place to escape to when I was unable to go anywhere else because of the lockdown and shielding.

Este un clasic confortabil. Hoult adaugă:

We kept the shed fairly basic so that it blends into its surroundings and does not look out of place in the garden. It measures 7 feet by 5 feet and is clad in Featheredge board with a pent roof. It has a double glazed window (made from an old UPVC bathroom window) which lets in a lot of light.

Our shed is themed on the TV series Peaky Blinders and is a replica of the Garrison pub from the show. I have been building this shed on and off for over 2 years, building it purely out of things we have either found or bought from car boot sales. It started life as an old dilapidated shed which was ready for demolition. After sitting in the shed, I decided to watch Peaky Blinders and thought how good would it be to transform this into the Garrison pub. All the props have either been hand made or bought at antique fairs and car boot sales. It has become a regular meeting place for family and friends for drinks before we go out or for a quiet night in. It is currently featured on the BBC series „Open All Hours” with Gregg Wallace.

With things getting back to normal now and lockdown rules relaxing, we can start using the shed again, so it will come back into its own as the ultimate garden pub and entertainment area.

During the last 14 months, it has been a place of solace, sanctuary and even a place for working from home. A shed is no longer just a place to keep your garden tools – it is now an extension of the home and a valuable extra room.
